The Inaugural AsiaPOP Comicon Manila Delivered a World Class Show
The inaugural AsiaPOP Comicon Manila (APCC) made waves all over the region, attracting over 45,000 local and international visitors who made their way to the World Trade Center in Pasay City.
From September 17 to 20, people went full geek mode as the exhibit hall opened up into what was dubbed as the ultimate pop culture convention to hit Manila and Southeast Asia this year.
“The Filipino fans definitely did not disappoint, and together with fans from the region, brought to APCC such passion and enthusiasm. APCC would not have been a success without them.” expressed Rita Magnus, General Manager of Universal Events & Entertainment.
APCC also cemented itself as a world class pop culture convention with the presence of international celebrities who received first-class treatment with private security teams and chopper rides from hotel to the convention venue.
Stars include Hollywood actor Paul Bettany, “Game of Thrones” star Nathalie Emmanuel, “Arrow” & “Teen Wolf” heartthrob Colton Haynes, and “Adventure Time” voiceover genius Jeremy Shada who came with his band, Make Out Monday, all of whom had fans lined up for hours to have autographs signed and photos taken with them.
Of the chopper ride, Emmanuel posted on her Instagram account. “First time in a helicopter. This was our ride to AsiaPOP Comicon. So exciting/scary! What a way to see the city.”
The celebrity panel sessions were another favourite, with visitors queuing in advance and rushing to get the best seats. Bettany, who is best known for being the voice of Jarvis and for playing Vision in the recent blockbuster “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” also dropped by the exclusive preview of Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War,” to the cheers of the comic and movie enthusiasts who managed entry to the screening after hours of queuing. This exclusive preview is the first to be screened in Asia Pacific.
“APCC 2015 managed to actually bring in geeks of all walks of life to World Trade Center. The energy and the excitement for each new activity was encouraging, the smiles of both kids and adults were definitely there and even the guests were actually happy to meet their fans (both paying and non-paying). The guests who actually attended were some of the best people I’ve met,” commented blogger Earl Maghirang of thefanboyseo.com.
Four-day Pop Spectacle
Pop culture fans populated the venue, going from booth to booth, having prints, comic books and action figures signed by homegrown and foreign comic book artists and toy designers, ordering exclusive merchandise from retailer stalls, having their photos taken with various artists and cosplayers, and enjoying the many displays from both local and international exhibitors.
“Everything was Instagrammable at the ‘con. From Comicave Studios’ Hulkbuster armor to other giant or life-size statues, to the toys and artwork on display at the various booths, to an amazing and accommodating group of cosplayers just wandering around the floor, the sights had attendees snapping away, uploading and hashtagging #asiapopcomicon,” wrote Mark Christian Parladé, comic book fan and contributing writer for Philippine Daily Inquirer.
The four-day spectacle was also home to attendees who dressed up as their favorite characters. But the star cosplayer was Guy Singzon who came as Spawn Samurai. Singzon was the overall champion of the Cosplay Authority Global Challenge (The CAGE), the world’s biggest and first-of-its-kind cosplay competition. He received a record-breaking payout of USD10,000 and is set to compete at the next AsiaPOP Comicon to be held in Abu Dhabi in December.
With the successful first edition of APCC, convention organizers revealed that AsiaPOP Comicon would now be an annual event in Manila, with plans to make succeeding installments even bigger and more jam-packed.
“APCC is going to be a yearly gathering and APCC is definitely going to be bigger as we plan to bring in more stars, artists, and surprises for everyone’s pop-culture pleasure. This is our way of making real the fans’ dreams of experiencing a comic con of this calibre. See you all in 2016!” Magnus added.
